Healthier Heart

Not only does testosterone appear to influence risk factors for cardiovascular disease, but there is also evidence that it may play a direct beneficial role for the heart itself. One key observation in multiple studies is that men with coronary artery disease appear to have lower T levels than men without coronary artery disease.

There also appear to be beneficial effects of T therapy for men once heart disease has already developed. A study of fifty men with low T and known heart disease randomized the group into weekly testosterone injections or injections of a placebo. At the end of eight weeks, the T injection group had fewer electrocardiogram (EKG) changes during exercise. In contrast, there were no fewer EKG changes in the patients taking the placebo. Another study of sixty-two men with known heart disease treated half the participants first with T therapy for a month and the other half with a placebo for a month, followed by two weeks without any treatment for either group. Then each group switched over to the other treatment for another month. During the monthlong periods of T therapy, men experienced less chest pain and fewer EKG changes than they did during the monthlong periods of placebo treatment.

The small number of studies in humans support the idea that T therapy may be beneficial for men with heart disease, but there is clearly more work to be done in this area.
